Let's skip the usual superlatives and just tell you what you need to know before you book. Pebble Beach Golf Links is a real, playable public golf course — not a shrine you observe from a distance. Yes, green fees hit $595 for non-resort guests, and yes, it's worth serious consideration if golf matters to you. The course opened in 1919, designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, and has hosted six U.S. Opens. It runs along the Pacific for eight consecutive holes starting at the 4th, with Holes 6 through 10 sitting directly above the water. The par-3 7th plays just 107 yards downhill to a postage-stamp green surrounded on three sides by surf. Miss it, and you're likely finding rocks.

The back nine at Pebble is where the course earns its reputation. The 17th is a par-3 that plays over a narrow inlet — in any kind of wind it becomes one of the hardest holes in golf. The 18th, a par-5 running along the ocean to a green in front of The Lodge, is one of the most recognizable closing holes in the sport. Neither hole is particularly long. Both are genuinely difficult. The course plays to 6,828 yards from the tips but the combination of ocean wind, small greens, and coastal rough make it play much harder than the yardage suggests. Average score for recreational golfers here is north of 100.

Practically speaking: book as early as possible (public tee times open 60 days out), request a caddie when you book (around $85–100 plus tip, and genuinely worth it for reading the wind), and plan for at least five hours on course. Morning fog is common May through July — if you want reliable sunshine and visibility, September through November is the sweet spot. Non-resort guests pay full freight; staying at The Lodge or The Inn at Spanish Bay drops the rate and guarantees availability. The 19th hole at The Tap Room does a serviceable post-round burger.
