About Gleneagles Golf Course

Most golfers who've played Gleneagles will tell you the same thing: they didn't expect it to be that hard. Jack Fleming designed this 9-hole layout in 1962 and tucked it into the hilly southeastern corner of McLaren Park — a part of San Francisco that most visitors never see. The elevation changes are real and relentless. You're climbing or descending on nearly every hole, and the fairways don't give you much room to miss left or right. San Francisco Recreation and Parks has called it one of the most challenging 9-hole courses in America, and regular players don't argue the point.

The course sits at 2100 Sunnydale Avenue, well off the tourist radar, which is exactly why locals love it. On a weekday morning you can show up, pay a few dollars, and have the place nearly to yourself. The greens are small and sloped, and the wind through McLaren Park arrives at odd angles depending on where you are on the course. Scoring well here takes course management and a short game that holds up under pressure — the kind of round that improves your game at every other course in the Bay Area.

A lease extension secured in 2024 keeps Gleneagles running through the coming years, which is good news for the community of regulars who treat this course like a second home. If you've only played the bigger SF munis and haven't made it out to McLaren Park yet, this one is worth the detour.
