About Marin Country Club
Marin Country Club was founded in 1954 and the original course was designed by Lawrence M. Hughes — an architect whose practice was shaped in part by his professional relationship with Donald Ross, and whose design philosophy at Marin reflects that influence in the strategic bunkering and the emphasis on approach play over raw length. Robert Muir Graves redesigned the layout in 1986, and in 2007-08 John Harbottle III — the same architect behind Cinnabar Hills in San Jose — undertook a comprehensive renovation that replaced the irrigation and drainage systems, rebuilt all the bunkers, and installed new greens. The updated course reopened in April 2008. In 2017, architect Doug Nickels introduced further refinements: repositioned bunkers, new forward tees to broaden accessibility, and a full redesign of the practice facilities. The club's website describes the cumulative design as reflecting a timeless philosophy that honors the golden age of course architecture.
The course plays par 72 at 6,652 yards with a slope of 135 and views of Ignacio Valley from several points on the back nine. The front nine introduces water hazards; the back nine becomes progressively hillier and demands accurate placement off the tee on a layout that Foretee's description calls narrow, requiring positioned shots rather than power. The USGA has used Marin Country Club as a qualifying venue multiple times: the 1993 US Open qualifying, the 2004 and 2011 US Amateur qualifying, the 2008 US Senior Open Amateur qualifying, and the 2010 US Mid-Amateur qualifying. That roster of events reflects the caliber of the course relative to other private clubs in Northern California.
Marin Country Club is managed by Troon and includes a full-service clubhouse with banquet facilities used for weddings, corporate events, and social gatherings. Membership inquiries can be directed to the club at (415) 382-6729 or through the club's website.
