About Mill Valley Golf Course
Mill Valley Golf Course has been part of this town's fabric since 1919, when a group of local business leaders finally succeeded — after two earlier failed attempts in 1896 and 1916, and a World War I interruption — in establishing the Mill Valley Country Club. Hugh and Ida Boyle leased a 100-acre parcel to the founding members on land in Warner Canyon, named for Dr. Alexander Warner whose family had owned it since the 1890s. Warner Creek, which still runs through the property, carries his name. By 1921 the membership had grown to over 230, with separate categories for male, female, junior, and non-golfing members. The Depression ended that era. By 1938 only 38 members remained, and the club turned to the city for survival. A bond measure went to voters three times before finally passing in 1939, and the City of Mill Valley has operated the course as a municipal facility ever since.
The 9-hole layout sits on 42 acres of coastal redwoods and rolling Marin hills, nine miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The course plays par 33 from the front nine configuration (par 32 for the back nine variation), covering 2,140 yards with six par 4s and three par 3s. A separate par-27 short course is also on the property for players building their game. Warner Creek crosses the routing and the redwood canopy provides shade through much of the round. The 4th hole — a par 4 under 400 yards — has developed a reputation among regulars as unusually difficult for its length. Tamalpais High School and Mill Valley Middle School both use the course as their home venue for matches, and junior clinics are a regular part of the calendar.
The course is managed by Touchstone Golf and operated under the City of Mill Valley Recreation department. The clubhouse doubles as an event venue available for weddings, concerts, and community gatherings. Green fees are among the lowest of any course in the Bay Area. Staples Golf Design has contributed to recent improvements including a new patio area, a putting course, and tee adjustments. The address is on Buena Vista Avenue in Mill Valley — walkable from downtown and a few minutes off Highway 101.
