The Insider's Guide

Best Time to Golf in Marin County

Marin County's golf season is delightfully long. Protected by its ridgelines, most of the county avoids the worst of SF's summer fog — though courses on the bay side can get morning marine layer through July.

April through October is reliably excellent for Marin golf, with the sweet spots being late spring (April–June) when the hills are impossibly green and rolling, and fall (September–November) when skies are clear and courses less crowded after the summer rush.

Marin gets more winter rain than the East Bay, but courses rarely close — they're simply softer. Indian Valley in Novato drains particularly well and is often playable within a day of heavy rain. Winter rounds in Marin are peaceful, affordable and often fog-free by midmorning.

Locals' Tips for Marin Golf

  • Indian Valley is Marin's best-kept secret — locals specifically avoid mentioning it to out-of-towners because it's so easy to get a tee time. The redwood canyon setting on the back nine is unlike anywhere else in the Bay Area.
  • Mill Valley Golf Course is cash only — ATM in the clubhouse. Don't show up with just a card. Also, the starter runs a tight ship — be on the tee when called.
  • Peacock Gap's back nine plays very differently from the front — more exposed to bay winds, longer and more demanding. The 16th hole along the shoreline is a genuine highlight.
  • Rooster Run as a Sonoma wine country warm-up — book an early morning round, then head north on US-101 to spend the afternoon tasting in Healdsburg or the Russian River Valley. Perfect Saturday itinerary.
  • Fog burns off later in Marin than most people expect — if it's foggy at 8am on the bay, wait until 10am for the Ocean-side courses. Indian Valley (inland) is almost always clear by 9am.

Getting Around Marin Golf Courses

  • Peacock Gap (San Rafael) — Cross the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge or take US-101 north to San Rafael. Easy to find off Point San Pedro Rd on the bay. Free parking on-site.
  • Indian Valley (Novato) — US-101 north to Ignacio Blvd in Novato, then into the hills. The approach through the redwoods is beautiful but narrow — take it slow.
  • Mill Valley Golf Course — Right in downtown Mill Valley, walkable from the town center. Street parking on Miller Ave. The most accessible Marin course to reach from San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Rooster Run (Petaluma) — US-101 north past Novato to Petaluma. About 45 minutes from San Francisco. Gateway course for golfers heading further into Sonoma wine country.

Combining Marin Golf with the County's Best

Marin County offers some of the most beautiful post-golf scenery in California. A Peacock Gap morning round followed by a drive through China Camp State Park on Point San Pedro Rd to downtown San Rafael for lunch is a perfect half-day. Add a late afternoon walk in Muir Woods if you have the energy.

The Mill Valley combination is quintessential: early round at the 9-hole municipal, then walk to Depot Bookstore for coffee, browse the Saturday farmers market, and hike up to the Mt. Tamalpais summit viewpoint in the afternoon. You've barely left the town center and had a complete Marin experience.
