About Callippe Preserve Golf Course
Callippe Preserve opened in 2005 on land in the Pleasanton foothills that was designated as protected habitat for the Callippe Silverspot, an endangered butterfly species native to the Bay Area. Designer Brian Costello had to route 18 holes through that constraint, and the result is a course that moves more naturally through the terrain than most modern builds — wide native grass corridors, oak woodlands on the edges, and views across the Tri-Valley that open up on the higher holes. It's a legitimate nature preserve that also happens to have a golf course running through it.
The layout works across a range of skill levels better than most courses in this price range. Five sets of tees let beginners and seniors play a comfortable distance while the back tees stretch the design into genuine challenge territory. The rolling fairways hold the ball reasonably well, and the greens, while not fast by private club standards, have enough contour to punish approach shots that miss the right quadrant. On a clear afternoon you can see Mount Diablo to the north and the ridgeline above Sunol to the south from the same tee box.
The clubhouse and dining are solid for a municipal facility, and the junior golf program here has been active since opening — a sign the community has built real roots around the course. It's a 5-minute drive from I-680 and pulls from both the East Bay and South Bay commuter corridors, which keeps the tee sheet full on weekday evenings in spring and fall. If you're looking for a round that doesn't feel like a typical flat muni, Callippe is one of the better options in the Tri-Valley.
